Something I didn't know about Spain was that they have annual city-wide food fights! In Bunol, Spain, there is an annual tomato fight. It happens the last Wednesday in August. I know I'm way late, but I thought it would be fun to share something like this!
According to city legend, the first Tomatina began about 80 years ago when a couple of kids got into a fight close to the town square, and started throwing what was available...tomatoes from the vegetable stands close to them.
There are so many tomatoes being thrown, smashed, squeezed, squished, and popped, that it sends knee-deep rivers of tomato juice through the city streets. This year alone, about 115,000 kg of tomatoes were used to celebrate La Tomatina!
